Arnold Christianson, Medical geneticist

Arnold Christianson qualified in medicine from the University of Zimbabwe and trained as a pediatrician at the Red Cross Children's Hospital, Cape Town. He worked in neuro-developmental pediatrics before moving into the field of medical genetics. He is currently the head of the Division of Human Genetics, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

His current interests and publications center on global epidemiology, the burden of birth defects, and the development of medical genetic services appropriate for middle- and low- income countries. He co-authored the March of Dimes Global Report on Birth Defects and serves as an expert adviser to the World Health Organization's Human Genetics Programme and Genomic Resource Centre.
