Joel Breman, senior scientific advisor at the Fogarty International Center, U.S. National Institutes of Health, is an epidemiologist whose research has addressed: quantifying the burden of malaria; determining the efficacy and effectiveness of antimalarial drugs for treatment and prevention; and evaluating the effect of personal protection methods (insecticide-treated nets and curtains) and other forms of vector control. He has trained, mentored, and collaborated with scientists and public health workers in over 20 countries in Africa in developing national malaria control policies, programs, and guidelines. Dr. Breman has been the lead editor of three volumes of articles on malaria published as supplements to the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (2001, 2004, and 2007; www.ajtmh.org/content). He was co-editor of Disease Control Priorities in Developing Countries, 2d ed. (www.dcp2.org). As lead author of the "Conquering Malaria" chapter of that volume, he and his co-authors showed that tools to combat malaria are, with the exception of vaccinations, among the most cost-effective interventions in public health.
